Brickellia

BRICKELLIA | PRODIGIOSA

Brickellia is, a lesser-known, but deeply respected herb in traditional medicine. Known by many as “prodigiosa” or “Mexican prodigiosa”, this resilient plant has been used for generations across Mexico and the American Southwestfor its powerful effects on blood sugar, digestion, and the liver.

Botanically speaking, Brickellia is a genus in the Asteraceae family, with Brickellia veronicaefolia and Brickellia cavanillesii being the most commonly used medicinal species. These hardy shrubs thrive in semi-arid regions and mountainous terrain, often growing wild along roadsides and rocky slopes- nature’s quiet pharmacy.

In Mexican and Indigenous herbal traditions, Brickellia has long been regarded as prodigiosa, or “the miraculous one.” It’s a name that hints at the plant’s revered status in folk medicine. The leaves, which are aromatic and slightly bitter, are typically brewed into infusions or decoctions to address a range of internal imbalances, especially those related to blood sugar regulation, liver function, and digestion.

Historically, curanderos (traditional healers) have used Brickellia to support people dealing with diabetes-like symptoms, sluggish digestion, jaundice, and general toxicity or congestion in the liver and gallbladder. Its use has been passed down through oral tradition, often taught in the kitchen - not the classroom - grandmothers teaching granddaughters how to brew it, locals gathering leaves in the hills, healers blending it with other desert herbs like chaparro amargo or oregano de monte.

When European-style medicine arrived in the Americas, Brickellia didn’t disappear. It remained a trusted remedy in rural communities, often used alongside biomedical treatments as a supportive, balancing herb. By the 20th century, its reputation grew beyond its native regions, and it began appearing in herbal shops, botánicas, and natural health stores throughout Mexico and the U.S., marketed for its role in supporting blood sugar balance and liver detoxification.

Unlike more globally commercialized herbs, Brickellia remains mostly rooted in local, regional herbalism. It’s not mass-produced or farmed on a large scale, and that’s part of its power- it’s a plant of place, story, and traditional wisdom. But in recent years, interest in ethnobotanical medicine and metabolic health has brought Brickellia into new light. Some modern herbalists refer to it as a “Mexican bitter,” aligning it with other traditional liver and pancreas tonics used around the world.

Even though Brickellia might not be in every wellness aisle yet, it’s a legacy herb- a quiet ally with deep roots in community healing, herbal knowledge, and plant-based resilience.
